‘Killing a Vampire’ by Jacky Dahlhaus

Killing a Vampire

In the final installment of the Suckers Trilogy, Kate’s past comes back to haunt her. After a TV appearance, her partner disappears, and while she initially puts it down to a problem in her relationship, as time passes, a more sinister reason sets alarm bells ringing. When the first of a series of suspect packages arrives on her doorstep, she’s forced to seek the help of the police, though someone closer to home is also on hand – someone Kate has been told to avoid…

Ms Dahlhaus has a bit of a reputation for mixing blood, guts and humour, and this third volume in her vampiric series is no different, although the action takes a bit of a back seat this time around. As always, the plot stays well away from vampire stock-in-trade scenes of neck-biting and Dracula-type bats, with the emphasis very much on Kate’s relationships. The tone is nicely judged and though some folk might say the writing has moved too far from the all-action scenarios of the first two books, it’s good to see the author has a firm grip on her characters.

A thoroughly enjoyable tale that rounds off the trilogy in a clever and logical way, without chucking away the essence of her characters. Which is nice.

Sounds good, Colin. I do like this kind of book from time to time.
