In the 1920s, young war widow and fashion enthusiast Ginger Gold sets off on an Atlantic crossing with her pal Haley Higgins. Bound for London, the pair are making the most of the trip and the banter between fellow passengers when the ship’s captain is found stuffed in a pickle barrel – dead. One of the other travellers turns out to be Chief Inspector Basil Reed, but the canny copper isn’t keen to acquiesce when Ginger offers her services in the hunt for the killer. Luckily, he soon realises Mrs Gold’s sleuthing skills are a boon, and the two join forces to search for clues.
This is the first book in the Ginger Gold Mystery series and is similar to Kerry Greenwood’s Miss Fisher Investigates. The story does take a little time to get going but soon romps along at a merry pace, with the heroine picking up clues and getting herself into bother at every turn. Ms Strauss has a firm grip on the ‘cozy’ murder genre and tells her story with lots of charm and wit. If you like your murders with only a modicum of gore and a jaunty leading lady, this will do very nicely.
