‘When Stars Will Shine’ by Emma Mitchell

When Stars Will Shine

Compiled by Emma Mitchell, this short story collection delivers festive-themed tales with a twist. Featuring Louise Jensen, Graham Smith, Malcolm Hollingdrake, Lucy Cameron, Val Portelli, Alex Kane and many others, the proceeds will be donated to supporting our troops.

As with all short story anthologies, this is a mixed bag, with tales as diverse as it’s possible to get in such collections. Gordon Bickerstaff’s ‘The Close Encounter’ features a protagonist from one of Gordon’s novels in a tale of a strange meeting with unexpected auguries. A businessman discovers a sanctuary at a lonely inn after his car breaks down in Paul T Campbell’s ‘Mountain Dew’, and two people find love in ‘A Gift for Christmas’ by Kris Egleton. However, it was the two Vietnam veterans in ‘Girl in a Red Shirt’ by Owen Mullen that really stood out for me – a fine piece of writing by yet another talented Scottish author.
