‘The Boy Who Wasn’t There’ by Kristi Helvig

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

In this short story, when Max the thief and sex-worker Skye, bump into each other in a café, it seems they’re being pursued by the same man. However, in their attempt to escape, things go awry and the two become separated. The story moves along at a good pace, and I was interested in the characters and what might become of them. The writing style is great, though I wondered about the author’s use of italics for street names (which is odd) and the inconsistency in telling the time (10a/4p/3am). Aside from that, I enjoyed this clever and energetic tale and will certainly look at more of the author’s work. (Loved the cover, too.)
