My Review (4 stars out of 5)
Finally reaching his destination in Virginia, Jack Reacher heads for his old army unit – the 110th Military Police. Intending to take the unit’s commanding officer Major Susan Turner out for dinner, Reacher finds the major has been detained in a military prison. Faced with accusations against his own army record, our hero must track down Major Turner, get her out of jail and find out what the hell is going on.
This is book 18 in the Jack Reacher series and though it’s not one of Lee Child’s best – a bit slow in places – it’s still a great read. The story kept me gripped most of the time and it was interesting to see how it differs from the (Tom Cruise) movie version (completely different, as it happens). With a little less ass-kicking than usual, the plot centres on unearthing the reasons behind the deaths of two soldiers in Afghanistan, as well as finding out if Reacher has a daughter.
Great story, if not one of his best.

This is completely unrelated to your post, but I just had to tell you that Bo and I have been rewatching the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes. I forgot how much fun they were, especially the early ones with David Burke as Watson. I still prefer Edward Hardwicke’s Watson, but it’s clear in those earlier episodes that they had fun with character traits for the main characters as well as the side cast for every episode. Do you have a favorite episode?

Hey JL, how ya doin? Yes, I love that whole series and have them on DVD – been meaning to re-watch them all so this a perfect reminder. My fav from the series is of course The Hound of the Baskervilles, with Hardwicke as Watson and the wonderful Ronald Pickup as Barrymore (I once sat next to him in the theatre). 😉

YOU DID?!?! That’s so cool!!! Oh yes, Brett’s HOUND is my fav adaptation of the story, though Bo is debating if we should try out the other six (!!!!) adaptations he has in his movie library. I had no idea we had so many in the house! I just remember watching Basil Rathbone, Peter Cushing, and Tom Baker adaptations. It was…kinda weird, watching Dr. Who play Sherlock Holmes. 🙂
We’re trying to get Blondie to read the Holmes stories, as I read them at her age and Bo did read a few to her during bedtime stories a few years back. But alas, a no go. If no animals are involved, she checks out, the little bugger. 🙂

There’s a smashing adaptation of Hound with Richard Roxburgh as Holmes, and I always remember the version with the great Stewart Granger, though that’s a bit twee 😉
