‘The Seven Visitations of Sydney Burgess’ by Andy Marino

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

After years of struggling with addiction, Sydney finds herself and her young son in a nice house, with a decent job and a loving partner. But when she unexpectedly encounters a burglar, the sequence of events before her escape to a neighbour’s house, become blurred. While she’s recovering in hospital, the sheriff tells Sydney that the intruder is dead and as far as the police are concerned, Sydney killed him. But Sydney can’t remember. Back home, dragged through her own memories, and haunted by a past that seems unwilling to let go, Sydney discovers her loving boyfriend suddenly doesn’t trust her…

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it’s a thrilling ride. Seen from the main character’s POV, we jump back and forwards through her life, as she struggles to piece together the weirdness that has overtaken her. What is the meaning of the strange images flitting through her brain? Why is her son scared to be close to her? What did the sheriff see in the bloody mess on the guestroom floor that so freaked him out?

Considering this is his first novel, Andy Marino has a talent for language that few authors ever achieve. His imagination is unfettered, free from the usual tropes we’re used to in horror novels. Conjuring up images and ideas that draw the reader in, Marino creates a story that is as unique as it is clever, writing with an intelligence and a wit that is a delight to behold.

More, please.
