‘Wild Fire’ by Ann Cleeves

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

Recent newcomers to Shetland—an English family with an autistic son—are shocked to find the body of a young nanny hanging in their barn. As the police begin their investigation, rumours quickly spread and the dead woman is linked to several individuals, prompting yet more stories and malicious gossip. DI Jimmy Perez is paired up once again with DCI Willow Reeves, forcing them both to face the reality of their on/off relationship. But Willow has news for Perez that could change everything, and with emotions bubbling under the surface, they struggle to deal with the investigation.

Wild Fire is the last book in Ann Cleeves’ Shetland series and it’s another cracking good read. As the detectives pick apart the truth behind the rumours, several people are added to their list of suspects, including the family who employed the dead woman. The tension between Perez and Reeves mirrors the difficulties in the investigation and keeps the plot simmering away all the way through. As I neared the end, I could barely contain myself trying to work out the identity of the killer. Suffice to say, the final furlong hurtles towards the finish line and a denouement that left me breathless.

An absolute cracker of a tale and a superb finale to this excellent series.
