‘The Infirmary’ by LJ Ross

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

(audiobook)

A serial killer stalks the streets of Newcastle, apparently targeting his victims at random. But when the female DCI in charge of the case goes missing, the ante is well and truly upped for DCI Ryan as he takes over the hunt for the killer. With each new victim, the team gain a few vital clues, but soon find themselves turning their suspicions on people within their own ranks.

Set before the first of the DCI Ryan mysteries (Holy Island), regular readers will already know the identity of the killer in this gory tale. However, even with this in mind, the author cleverly maintains the tension all the way through, simmering away with plenty of twisty turns, until the top tec gets his eye on the killer. The final chapters, including the chase through the Victoria tunnels beneath the Hancock Museum, are scary and thrilling.

Aside from the author’s usual tendency to include too many clichés, this is an exciting tale that gives an insight into Ryan’s state of mind at the start of the first book, Holy Island.

Hi Colin, it is an interesting idea to set a story before the start of the series in which the killer is already known. It must have been written due to reader demand.
