‘Killing Eve – Codename Villanelle’ by Luke Jennings

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

Russian orphan Oxana has been trained as a ruthless assassin. Controlled by a group known only as The Twelve, her handler, Konstantin, delegates her targets. Meanwhile, MI5 officer Eve Polastri follows the killer’s progress, but an error of judgment leaves Eve out in the cold. Given a shabby office and a small team, she sets out to catch the woman now known as Villanelle…

This is the first book in the series known as Killing Eve. Having watched the BBC series a couple of times, I was keen to find out how the books stand up. This first one may be a short read, but the plot moves quickly, charting Villanelle’s progress as she notches up several gory murders in various exotic locations. It’s worth noting that the storyline is very different to the TV series and there are some major changes in the cast of players (including a life-changing scene with one of the main characters). The details of locations, weapons, and tactics are fascinating, though the bit where a group of drunks try to break a password is a tad farfetched.

An exciting ride that takes no prisoners.
