‘Henry VIII – King and Court’ by Alison Weir

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

Alison Weir’s highly researched book explodes the life of Henry VIII and that of his court. While the book does not give as thorough an accounting of the six wives (which Weir delves into in greater detail in another book), we do get the low-down on the day-to-day running of the court on everything from food, clothing, jousting and gambling, to politics, war and bed-time shenanigans. Some of the minutiae of the king’s household is less interesting and might be said to over-egg the factual custard, but for the most part this is a first-class account of all the things we’ve ever wondered about in the life of the most-married Tudor monarch. The author also puts to bed many of the most popular myths and anecdotes about Henry’s life and sheds new light on his personal habits and character quirks.

The audiobook is beautifully read by Phyllida Nash.
