‘Killing Rommel’ by Steven Pressfield

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

(Audiobook)

In 1942, Hitler’s armies are sweeping across Europe. In North Africa, Rommel has beaten back the British Eighth Army and stands ready to overrun Egypt, Suez, and the oil fields of the Middle East. The British come up with a desperate plan to infiltrate enemy lines and stop the Afrika Korps. In this fictional account, Steven Pressfield uses real people and real events to tell an exciting and inspiring tale.

Superbly narrated by Alfred Molina, the author tells the gripping story of a fictional commando unit who set out to kill Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. Based on real events and featuring people we’ve heard of (such as Major Paddy Mayne from the BBC’s SAS Rogue Heroes), Pressfield’s plot is packed with authentic details that make us believe he was there and went through these events himself. The story centres around his hero, ‘Chap’ Chapman, who joins the army and volunteers for the Long-Range Desert Group—a team who fight alongside the SAS. From the moment Chapman’s team infiltrates a German unit, the action is almost unstoppable. The novel is thrilling in its audacity, as the team target a German commander whose reputation is legendary, and whose military tactics may well win the war. The book is funny, touching and at times horrific in its level of detail, highlighting the true horror of war.

An exciting and entertaining book that will thrill fans of war stories.
