My Review (5 stars out of 5)
During a wedding celebration, one of the guests ventures outside to meet an admirer – only to discover the individual has something more deadly in mind. Called to the scene, DI Clare Mackay is faced with a puzzle. The dead man has a white card on his body bearing the number ‘5’, which suggests to McKay that there may be more deaths to come. Her theory soon proves correct when another victim is targeted.
Having recently moved to the St Andrews force from Glasgow, Clare has a few issues of her own to deal with – not least of which is a DCI who seems determined to put a spanner in her police career. Can the new kid on the block prove her worth and uncover what links the victims before the killer strikes again?
This book was shortlisted for the Bloody Scotland Scottish Crime Debut of the Year and is the first I’ve read by this author. It’s a cracking good tale that drew me in from the first page. The heroine is very likeable, and I soon found myself unable to put the book down. The characters are an interesting lot, particularly McKay’s relationship with her boss, which swings between his need for her to find a killer and McKay’s insistence that even the DCI’s friends aren’t immune from being painted with an accusatory brush. The plot is of the twisty-turny type and it’s hard to see where it’s going, but by the halfway mark the action hots up considerably and there’s a thrilling denouement that took me by surprise.
An entertaining and exciting read that’ll thrill fans of Scottish noir.

This sounds like a good murder mystery. Your comment that is a cracking good story always makes me smile.
