‘Mania’ by LJ Ross

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

Still awaiting the decision of the disciplinary panel at Southmoor Hospital, Doctor Alexander Gregory is at a loose end. A visit to the theatre with his friend and mentor Bill Douglas drags him into a murder mystery when one of the actors falls ill and dies on stage. DCI Hope is keen to have Gregory involved in the investigation, but an old foe in the police force puts the good doctor on his guard. A second murder sets off a hunt into the dead actor’s past in a bid to find a link that might lead to the killer, but when links are found they point to another possible victim – Bill Douglas.

Narrated by Richard Armitage, this is book four in the Alexander Gregory series, and it’s a cracker. Gregory has plenty to think about with a possible threat to his friend Bill, as well as an obvious (and possibly disarming) attraction between himself and the investigating officer. The theatre setting is also interesting, throwing up several possible suspects with reasons for wanting revenge, but the final section had me chomping at the bit as the story galloped to its thrilling denouement.

Another great read from this talented author.
