‘The Quarry’ by Iain Banks

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

In The Quarry Iain Banks puts a group of old university pals in a house for a reunion and lets them loose with their memories, problems, irritations and frustrations. The owner of the house is dying, and with his son Kit (who has the hots for one of the house guests), he gets together with the others to try and locate a missing video tape which some of the guests think might be rather important.

Several years ago, I read a few of this author’s books – Walking on Glass, The Bridge, The Crow Road, Complicity and The Business and I enjoyed every one of them. With this one, I wasn’t so sure. While it is certainly entertaining (particularly Guy’s mega rant towards the end), it doesn’t really go anywhere. The book is his last work and may have been nothing more than a platform for him to have his say about all that’s wrong with the world. And yes, it is engaging and funny and extremely witty, but for me it doesn’t compare with the likes of Complicity and The Crow Road.

An interesting and entertaining book, though not one of his best.

I don’t know this author. I think I’ll look for the books you enjoyed more though.

Those ones are my favourites, Robbie, especially The Crow Road.
