‘Broken Ground’ by Val McDermid

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

A body found buried in a peat bog in a remote spot in the Highlands, sends cold-case investigator DCI Karen Pirie to the scene. Buried along with the body are a pair of pre-war motorcycles, but the condition of the body suggests the murder is more recent. As well as taking flak from her boss for involving herself in a new case, Karen is drawn into a difficult situation when she overhears a conversation in a café.

This is book 5 in the Karen Pirie series and it’s another stonking good read from the queen of Scottish noir. As usual, Karen’s boss (the Dog Biscuit) is keeping a close on the DCI’s activities and throws Karen an additional irritation by placing another cop in her team without discussing it first. The action moves between the 1940s, 1995 and 2018, creating a plot that is clever and intricate. I particularly enjoyed the final race to Bute House to interrupt an event held by the First Minister – classic.

Another great read that kept me riveted from the first page to the last.
