The follow up to ‘Darrienia’ continues the struggle to bring the mighty Severaine to heel. Gripped by guilt and grief, Daniel takes on the fight for justice and revenge, fielding those who might befriend or betray him. But the prophesies tell of only one conclusion – and it isn’t a good one.

I hadn’t read the first book in this series, but it seems to work well as a standalone. Fantasy novels of the epic variety (of which I assume this is one), tend to pass me by, and as my interest in mythology has waned somewhat since my schooldays, I probably missed out on some of the intricacies of the plot in terms of the Greek gods. Nevertheless good writing is good writing, and Ms Simmill has a way with words. I’m always fascinated how some authors can create huge worlds out of nothing, their characters as real and vibrant as if they were sitting next to me.

To be honest, when I finished the book, I couldn’t really say for sure what The Severaine is about, though I’m willing to admit I got more interested in the language than the plot.
