‘Are You Actually Going to be Prolific or Just Make Excuses?’ by Brandon Q Scott

***

This is another tome in Brandon Scott’s series about writing, publishing and getting things done. With his usual bulldog approach, the author lays down his ideas for writing quickly and efficiently. While he’s quite right about (especially) indie authors needing to put out new books regularly, he does make it sound a little like a production line – write each book in super-fast time and publish a new one each month.

My only issue with this method is that it involves planning. Along with the likes of Stephen King, I’m a confirmed pantser (no plan, no synopsis, no nothing), so most of the exercises Mr Scott puts forward (including writing sprints, which I’ve tried) don’t work for me. However, his enthusiasm is great and I’m sure it’ll work well for those who like to plan their books before starting to write.

One other thing – the covers for the books in this series (three, I think) are all so similar that you might think they’re the same book – even different colours instead of the same bland white would work wonders. Also, there are a few irritating typos (‘your’ instead of ‘you’re’) which I’m tempted to say might be a result of writing too fast!

An interesting and motivating book for those who like to know what they’re writing before they write.

I aim for a book a year, Colin. It takes a long time to research, write, edit, proof and then publish. As far as I’m aware, Mr King publishes one book a year, usually in time for Christmas.

True, but to be fair, he did write The Running Man in a week!

Like you, I do prefer pantsing to planning! When it comes to the whole “series,” thing, though, I can appreciate having at least some major plot thingeys hammered out. Hope you’re well in this new year! xxxxx
