‘High Risk’ by Ben Timberlake

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

(Audiobook)

Ben Timberlake delves into his various careers and non-careers as an archaeologist, Special Forces soldier, combat medic and drug addict, emerging in one piece, though perhaps not quite the same man as he once was.

From a truly scary near-death experience in a very dodgy bar in Yugoslavia to his final struggle to come off heroin, Timberlake doesn’t just give us the story of his adventures and the many threatening and dangerous experiences he’s encountered, he also explains the theories behind the physical and medical effects for what occurs in each case. So, when faced with having a gun pushed into his mouth, he explores what happens in the brain, in the body, and to the psyche. And this isn’t just some fool mouthing off about his stupid antics, for he backs it all up with quotes from scientific papers, discussions with experts and various other highly qualified authorities.

It’s fair to say it was the SAS bit I was most interested in, but the Author tells such a fascinating and unfettered tale (and, it has to be said, with a huge spoonful of humour), that I found it compelling and amazingly informative.

Read by the author himself, this is a fascinating and scary book.

Yeah, not the sort of things I’d want to try, though 😉
