‘Looking Good Dead’ by Peter James

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

When the body of a woman is found in a field in Brighton, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is reminded of the disappearance of his own wife. However, identifying the corpse proves difficult as the dead woman’s head is missing. Meanwhile, on his train journey home, struggling businessman Tom Bryce discovers a CD left by another passenger. Intending to return it to the owner, he checks the disc for information – and gets a nasty shock.

This is the third Peter James book I’ve read and it’s an absolute stonker. As always with this author, it’s an easy read but there are plenty of surprises along the way – some of them of the gory and distinctly Oh-My-God variety. The plot moves around a lot from one group of characters to another, dropping little cliff hangers at the end of many chapters and leaving the reader no choice but to keep reading. At 519 pages, it’s a substantial book, but I zoomed through it with gusto.

Gory enough to put some readers off, this is nevertheless a proper rollercoaster, race-against-time thriller that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat.
