‘No Escape’ by Robert Crouch

When Kent Fisher’s new wife Gemma takes his car and goes missing early one morning, the amateur sleuth is forced to focus on his detecting skills to work out where she is, why she left and who else might be involved.  With only Gemma’s mobile phone and a few mysterious texts to go on, Kent calls on everyone who knows Gemma to try and work out what’s going on. But after his car is found burned out with a body inside, Kent fears the worst…

Having been a fan of the Kent Fisher Mysteries from the first, I was really looking forward to this one, and being unable to put it down, ended up reading it in a single sitting. What I love about these books is the author’s skill in developing his characters. Kent isn’t known for his ability to express his feelings so is thrown into turmoil when he has to come to terms with his own and Gemma’s difficult histories to solve the case. As the story unfolds, he gradually uncovers the truth and finds what he does know is very little. 

As always, Robert Crouch writes in an engaging style that is clever and witty, with his usual sense of humour coming through to keep the subject matter from becoming too serious. The way he deals with the emotional issues in this tale is nothing short of superb. Within a few pages, the story bubbles up to the boil and simmers away all the way through, with a frantic race to save Gemma and a thrilling cliff-top confrontation that shocks and surprises at every turn. By the denouement I was in tears and already yearning for the next adventure. 

A fantastic series that just gets better and better.
