DCI Ryan’s plans to leave Newcastle in search of a killer are put aside when DC Jack Lowerson turns up on Ryan’s doorstep one night in a state of utter despair. Another officer is dead and Lowerson may be to blame. But in order to ensure everything is above board, the young copper’s plight must be investigated by another police force. Before he has time to think about it, Ryan learns of a more immediate problem – an email containing an explosive threat throws him and his team into turmoil as the hunt for a bomber begins.

This is book #8 in the DCI Ryan series and this time around the mystery concerns a series of bomb threats and the search to catch the perpetrator. As usual, Ms Ross includes enough detail of police procedure and other specifics to give the story a realistic feel. Also, her descriptions of the landscape and surrounding countryside are always a big part of the attraction, as are the continually developing relationships between Ryan and his team. Having been born in Newcastle myself, I’m always keen to read books that are based around the city, and the author’s local knowledge makes this tale all the more thrilling.

A thumping good read that kept me riveted all the way through.
