‘Dead Like You’ by Peter James

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

At a New Year’s Eve ball in a Brighton hotel, a woman is attacked as she returns to her room. When another woman is assaulted, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is reminded of a series of crimes from twelve years earlier – crimes he was not able to solve. And a woman whose life he could not save.  As victims’ shoes are taken by the perpetrator, could this be the Shoe Man from before, or is there a copycat rapist on the loose?

This is the sixth book in the Roy Grace series and this time focuses on a series of brutal attacks on women. The plot sets up a number of possible suspects who all have issues with footwear, but which one is committing the crimes? Although the story occasionally lags, the pace picks up towards the final furlong, when Grace and his team hurry to catch the perp before he finishes off another victim. As always there’s plenty of police-procedural detail for those sticklers for reality, but the twisty-turny plot kept me wondering how it would end.

Another great read from Mr J.

Why is it that women always seem to be the victims, Colin? Sometimes, I just wonder what goes wrong as women are usually nurturers. Why do some men want to kill them and over shoes?

Yes, lots of crime writers focus on women as victims. Seems this is what readers want.
