My Review (5 stars out of 5)
In 1700s New York, apprentice problem solver and former magistrates clerk Matthew Corbett, is tasked with transporting murderer Tyranthus Slaughter from a Philadelphia asylum back to the New York City waterfront. Along with his companion Greathouse, Matthew manages the initial part of the journey well, but when Slaughter puts a proposition to the pair, Matthew and his pal soon find they’ve agreed to a bargain that places them, and several other individuals, in deadly danger.
This is the third book (of eight) in the Matthew Corbett series and, continuing on from the previous one (The Queen of Bedlam), it follows Matthew as he embarks on a dangerous mission. The story takes in a hidden tribe of native Americans, an exploding box, a series of brutal murders and a deliciously grisly sausage making enterprise. While the writing is not quite as sharp and tight as in the previous books, the story hurtles along from one disaster to another, throwing our hero into ever more dangerous situations where he narrowly missed death a dozen times.
A thoroughly absorbing and highly entertaining read.
NB The book would work well as a standalone, but I’d recommend reading the series in order.
