‘Impostor’ by LJ Ross

Version 1.0.0

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

Forensic psychiatrist, Doctor Alexander Gregory, explores the darkest minds to expose the secrets underneath – skills which place his name at the top of the list when a murder investigation team seek help tracking down a killer. Journeying to County Mayo, Ireland, Gregory finds a quiet community torn apart by the murder of a young mother. But the Garda are shocked when Gregory suggests the killer is most likely not a stranger to the town, but one of their own.

This is book 1 in LJ Ross’s Dr Alex Gregory series, and it’s an absolute cracker. I’m familiar with the author’s DCI Ryan books but this is a very different affair. The story is the same – a killer on the loose – but Gregory’s profiling advice brings a new slant to the police investigation. What I really like about the hero is the authenticity of the character, which suggests Ms Ross has done a fair bit of research to create such a realistic portrayal. There’s also a nice sideline in inner torment, as Gregory struggles to deal with his own demons – a patient whose murderous past haunts him on an almost nightly basis.

Narrated by actor Hugh Dancy, this is a thrilling tale that kept me guessing all the way through.
