‘Silent Voices’ by Ann Cleeves

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

Following her doctor’s orders, DI Vera Stanhope makes the effort to take regular exercise by swimming a few lengths of the pool in her local gym. When she discovers a body in the sauna room it looks as though the woman died of natural causes, but ligature marks around the throat soon point to a more sinister explanation. Learning that the victim was a social worker, Vera and her team uncover links to a notorious case involving the death of a child.

This is book 4 in the Vera Stanhope series and the 12th I’ve read by this author. In this adventure, Vera is drawn into a complicated case involving lots of possible suspects. But when it comes to a motive, the team get a bit stumped. As always, Ms Cleeves uses the Northumberland landscape as a backdrop to the crime, and cleverly weaves the rising flood waters into a final breathtaking race to catch the killer.

An ingenious plot with a tremendous finale.

Great review Colin. When tidying my bookshelves recently I found I had three copies of Silent Voices. I must really want to read it! I’m currently reading Hidden Depths from the same series. 💕📚

Thanks Sandy – Hidden Depths is very good too, though I think Silent Voices is an absolute cracker.
