‘Dragons in Their Heads’ by Joy Mutter

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

Set in a castle in the Scottish Highlands in 2026, three dragon eggs are discovered in separate locations. The people who find them are tossed into a magical and scary world where their lives are turned upside down, and where the threat of instant death is ever present.

Having read most of this author’s books (and being used to surprises) I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one. I’m not a huge fan of dragon-type fantasies but this is not your typical dragon story. The characters are believable and realistic as they struggle to come to terms with their new roles as carers for three newly hatched dragons. As with many of Ms Mutter’s stories, lots of people die in interesting ways, while the heroes of the book are thrown together in a castle where they become the recipients of huge great wodges of cash in return for looking after the dragonettes. But the threat to life doesn’t just extend to our heroes, and the possibility of a horde of red dragons destroying the earth keeps the tension simmering away.

An entertaining and unexpected tale from the one of my favourite indie authors.
