A terminally ill patient asks nurse Shona for assistance with an apparently unrelated problem. But unsuspecting Shona is caught off guard when her own family, and more specifically, her relationship with her father, is dragged into the limelight. Thrust into a situation that could blow her own life wide open, Shona must uncover a web of lies and work out who the real ‘villain’ is in order to uncover the truth.
This is the first of HA Dawson’s psychological thrillers that I’ve read and is also the first in her Circles of Subterfuge series. Though the story is slow to start, it soon picks up pace as the heroine begins to find her way through a mystery that could answer questions about her father, as well as helping her with issues around trust and insecurity. The writing is quite analytical at times and delves into the emotional traits of the characters, as well as exploring how they manipulate each other as each of them strives to reach their own purpose. I particularly liked the on/off relationship between Shona and Justin, and the way the author builds the tension between them, keeping the reader guessing.
An interesting and thought-provoking mystery.
