My Review (5 stars out of 5)
Following a road accident, Inspector Max Mallery is keen to get back to his duties in Bordeaux, but a call from German-born Anna Hartmann throws him a curve ball. Not only is she Max’s ex-wife, but her husband Nicolas Lavigne (a former colleague of Max’s), has gone missing. When a body is washed up on the banks of the Seine, Max determines to get to the bottom of the mystery, but instead finds himself embroiled in a world of lies, money laundering and prostitution.
This is book 4 in the Mallery and Hobbs series and like the others, starts off at a fairly gentle pace before the real story gets going. The book is an easy read and gradually builds the tension as Max and his sidekick try to untangle the mystery, dealing with the unreliable Anna, a commissioner who wants the case closed and a dangerous killer on the loose. As always, the author shows off her descriptive powers with charming scenes involving French and English food, beautiful scenery and a bevy of well-drawn and interesting characters who bring the story to life.
Another great crime story from this talented author.
