Two journalists working with Millennium magazine plan to expose a sex trafficking gang in Sweden, but before their work is finished, the pair are murdered. When the police discover Lisbeth Salander’s prints on the weapon, they assume she must be guilty. But the two journalists are not the only ones who have been murdered. Meanwhile, Millennium’s Mikael Blomkvist is certain Salander isn’t responsible and sets out to track down the real killers, while Salander herself makes her own plans…
This is book two in the Millennium series and takes up the story with Salander allowing some time to herself, investing some of the money she inveigled from Wennerstrom in a new apartment. Using her hacking skills, she keeps track of Blomkvist’s activities and those of several others. She also discovers that the mysterious Zala is involved in the sex trafficking operation and sets out to find him. Like the first book, this is a hefty tome and took me several weeks to read, but from the first page I was completely captivated. We learn a lot more about Salander as both Blomkvist and the police delve into her past. This provides a more complete picture of the young woman, garnering sympathy for her despite her violent tendencies. As before, Larsson’s writing is superb and while at times there is a lot of detail, it all adds to the overall sense of a magnificently absorbing and exciting thriller.
