A little while ago, Ben Fox of Shepherd got in touch with me, asking if I’d be interested in recommending some of my favourite reads, while at the same time promoting one of my own books. The service is free for authors, so I gave it a go.
Last week my page on Shepherd was published. Titled, The best murder mysteries featuring unusual amateur sleuths, I give my reasons for recommending my five choices, what I loved about them, and why I really like stories about amateur sleuths.

The Shepherd team aim to promote authors by having them recommend books on particular topics, themes, or moods, such as The best contemporary middle grade novels for girls who love the outdoors, The best accessible first contact sci-fi novels and The most fabulous historical mysteries set in American cities, as well as more mainstream titles choices, like Best fantasy books of 2023.
So far, more than 11,000 authors have contributed to the site and there’s a great DNA Program to help readers find books they’ll love.
If you’re looking for a better way to find your next read, check out Ben and his team at Shepherd.

Hi Colin, thank you for this post. I have heard about Shepherd before form other readers and writers. Worth investigating. Have a great weekend.
