‘Wild’ by Cheryl Strayed

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

Cheryl Strayed’s story of an 1100-mile solo hike on the Pacific Crest Trail that helped her to rebuild her life after her divorce and the death of her mother. From the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State, Cheryl faced everything from rattlesnakes and bears, to losing her boots, running out of water, and dealing with threatening behaviour from other travellers.

The audiobook is entertainingly narrated by Laurel Lefkow, bringing Cheryl Strayed’s journey to life with lots of humour, colourful characters and dangerous situations. Having never walked more than ten miles at a time before, I can’t imagine what an 1100-mile hike would do to my feet. Buying a pair of boots that turn out to be too small is only one of the problems Cheryl has to deal with, along with realising how unprepared she is to embark on the trip, (such as packing a rucksack that’s too heavy for her to lift, and not buying the right kind of fuel for her stove). The book is well written, witty and thought-provoking, as if flips back and forward through the author’s life, detailing incidents with her abusive father, her experiments with heroin, and the death of her mother.

A fascinating book that tells one woman’s story of how she healed herself and got her life back on track.

It is so sad when parents are abusive. This sounds like a good memoire.
