‘Unruly’ by David Mitchell

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

(Audiobook)

From legendary (and non-existent) King Arthur to Elizabeth I, this is a book that charts the rise and fall of England’s Kings and Queens. Revealing who did the job well and who didn’t, David Mitchell lifts the lid on the royal highnesses of history without ever letting the subject become boring, which must be a plus.

I have a huge book about the kings and queens of England but have never managed to get past the first chapter, so this version was a breath of fresh air. David Mitchell doesn’t allow his own opinions to go unnoticed in his criticisms of the monarchy, but for fans of his comedy, that is surely a bonus. Only occasionally hilarious it is nevertheless amusing throughout and reveals all sorts of interesting and entertaining facts about the royal personages we’re familiar with (Henry VIII, in particular) as well as those we’re not so knowledgably about.

Read by the author, this is an informative and fascinating trek through England’s royalty.
