‘Time and Time Again’ by Ben Elton

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

Former soldier and celebrated explorer, Hugh ‘Guts’ Stanton, embarks on an adventure that could change history. Summoned to Cambridge University by old friend Professor McCluskey, Stanton learns of the secretive Order of Chronos and their collection of documents submitted to the university by Sir Isaac Newton. Stanton is told that there is a possibility of travelling back in time to change one moment in history. The mission requires a special individual with the skills and courage to take on a highly dangerous quest. Finding himself in Sarajevo in 1914, Stanton embarks on an objective that could change the world and prevent millions of deaths. But can such a mission really make a difference?

It’s a while since I read anything by Ben Elton but I’m happy to report that this book grabbed my attention from the first page. Time and Time Again is an intelligent and delightfully clever book suggesting that preventing the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand could stop the outbreak of a world war. On the face of it, our hero’s task makes sense, but he soon discovers that everything he does in 1914 has an impact on everything else. The author’s attention to detail lifts the book from a straight-forward historical novel to a thrilling and entertaining adventure.

A highly enjoyable and thought-provoking tale.
