My Review (5 stars out of 5)
Convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, Andy Dufresne is sent to prison where he meets up with Red: a man who can get pretty much anything into the jail. But Andy’s needs are simple – all he wants is a small rock-hammer for carving stones and a poster of Rita Hayworth.
Filmed as The Shawshank Redemption, this is one of Stevie’s best novellas. The paperback version comes in at 130 pages, and it’s a cracking good read. Unlike some versions of Mr King’s stories, this one is fairly accurate to the film version. Told from the point of view of fellow inmate, Red, we hear how Andy is initially targeted by some of the prison’s more dubious characters but manages to make himself popular with other prisoners and some of the guards by utilising his banking skills. The writing, as always, is top notch and proves yet again what a terrific storyteller Stephen King is.

Hi Colin, I also really enjoyed this novella and the movie. I read it as one of four novellas in a book called Different seasons.

Yes, it was. The other stories are also good although I did find one of them about an ex-Nazi in hiding in the USA, rather sickening. But King is King.
